A lot of people believe they have to wait a full year before applying for Social Security Disability benefits. That’s a common misconception, and waiting can actually hurt your claim. While your medical condition does need to last at least a year, the application process itself can take up to two years, so that requirement is often met while your claim is pending.

Delaying can create real problems. Medical records can be lost, doctors retire, offices close, or insurance coverage ends, all of which make it harder to prove your case. Some people also lose their support networks along the way, which can complicate communication and even lead to denied claims.

On top of that, waiting too long can cost you money. SSDI only pays up to one year of back pay, and SSI only pays from the date you apply. If you’re not working because of a medical condition, the best move is to apply as soon as possible.
