People 50 and older get some real advantages applying for Social Security disability that younger people wish they had. Most folks have no idea this shift even exists, so they either talk themselves out of applying or assume the rules are the same at every age. They are not.

The brutal standard before 50

If you are under 50, the bar is high. To get disability benefits, you essentially have to show there is no work at all that you can do, not your old job, not anything else out there. That means ruling out a lot of very easy desk jobs and sedentary work too. Proving you can’t do even those is extremely hard, and it’s where a lot of younger claims fall apart.

What changes the day you turn 50

Once you turn 50, it gets much easier. Instead of showing there is no work at all you can do, you mainly have to show three things.

  • You can’t do light work. Light work generally means a job that has you standing and walking about six hours in an eight-hour day, lifting 10 to 20 pounds during that time.

  • You can’t do your past work from the last five years.

  • You can’t do jobs with skills you learned in your past work.

That first piece is a much easier thing to show than ruling out every job in the economy. You are no longer being measured against every easy desk job that exists, you are being measured against light work, and for a lot of people with real medical conditions, that’s a line they genuinely can’t meet.

Why the past-work piece is usually winnable

The second part, showing you can’t go back to your past work, sounds like a hurdle, but think about it. If you are no longer working because of a medical condition, there is generally a very good reason you can’t do that past work. If you could still do it, you’d probably still be doing it. So for most people who stopped working because their health forced them to, this piece tends to take care of itself. The same goes for potential jobs with skills you learned in your past work.

Final thought

If you’ve ever thought about applying for Social Security disability, or you didn’t even know this was something available to you, and you are 50 or older, I strongly encourage you to apply. The rules genuinely tilt in your favor once you cross that age line, and a lot of people leave benefits on the table simply because no one ever told them.
