📬 The Letter That Changed Everything
It happens more often than you’d think. Someone wins their disability case after years of fighting, finally starts to breathe again and then, out of nowhere, the benefits stop.
There are two main ways people lose their benefits and they happen more often than you’d think.
Medical Recovery: Every few years, the SSA reviews your case in what’s called a Continuing Disability Review (CDR). If your medical records show improvement or if you stop seeing your doctor altogether, the SSA might assume you’ve recovered and end your benefits.
Work Recovery: If you earn more than $1,690 per month in 2026, the SSA considers that “substantial gainful activity” meaning, in their eyes, you’re no longer disabled. Even earning less can raise red flags if they believe you could work more.
Younger claimants often face more scrutiny than older ones since recovery is seen as more likely. That’s why staying in treatment, keeping your contact info current, and tracking your income carefully are essential to protecting your benefits.
Action Items:
Continue to get medical treatment once the disability claim is granted.
Ensure your address and phone number are always updated with the SSA.
If the SSA decides to take away your benefits, you can appeal the decision and argue in front of an administrative law judge.
