Pain Alone Isn’t Enough

If you’re fighting for disability benefits because of back pain, here’s the truth the SSA doesn’t tell you: your pain alone isn’t enough

The Social Security Administration wants proof, and the king of all evidence for back pain cases is the MRI (or CT scan). If you don’t have one, get one. If it’s been a while, update it. Because when the word “severe” shows up in that MRI report, it can change everything.

X-rays alone are not enough. The SSA might send you for one, but it rarely shows the severity of your condition. What they really want to see is detailed medical imaging, consistent pain management, surgical history/consideration, and functional limitations that make it clear you can’t sustain full-time work. You don’t need all of these to win, but these are the building blocks of strong back pain cases.

To be clear, sometimes a first MRI won’t show anything that will help in a disability claim. Sometimes an updated MRI won’t show anything new from the first. And typically MRIs cost around $1,000.00 if you can’t get insurance to pay for them, which is cost prohibitive for many. But you deserve to understand how these different types of scans can affect your claim.

Action Items:

  • Talk to your doctor about whether getting an updated MRI is right for you.

  • Obtain a statement from your doctor detailing your functional limitations using this form.

  • Ensure any assistive devices (cane, walker, wheelchair, brace) you use are prescribed by your doctor in your medical records.
