If you really need to win your Social Security Disability case, there is one step that can increase your chances more than almost anything else. Get a statement from your doctor that explains exactly how your condition limits your ability to work.

I’m a disability lawyer, and I can tell you from experience that medical records alone often aren’t enough. Your records might show diagnoses, test results, and treatment history, but they don’t always explain how your condition affects your ability to function day to day.

What Social Security really wants to know is this:
What can you still do, and what can’t you do, on a regular, full-time basis?

That’s why a detailed statement from your doctor can make such a big difference.

Why doctor statements are so powerful

When a doctor clearly describes your limitations in the language Social Security uses, it becomes much easier for a judge or disability examiner to approve the case. For example, strong statements often address things like:

  • How long you can sit, stand, or walk

  • How much you can lift or carry

  • How often you would miss work

  • Problems with concentration or memory

  • Anxiety, depression, or other mental health symptoms

Without this kind of detail, the SSA may assume you can do more than you really can. With it, your case becomes much clearer.

The forms I use with my own clients

When I represent someone, I don’t just ask their doctor to write a letter. I give them special forms that translate your limitations into the exact wording Social Security looks for when deciding cases. These forms are designed to make it easier for doctors to explain your restrictions in a way that fits the disability rules. There are two different versions:

It’s important to give the right form to the right provider depending on your situation.

Any time I go into a hearing and my client has one of these forms completed, I know the case is in a much stronger position. I can’t promise every case will win, but having a good medical source statement like this can make a huge difference.
