A lot of people want to know whether their medical condition qualifies for disability. A more useful question is whether your case fits one of the three types that are strongest. If an accident or an injury has left you unable to work, you can still collect what I call "mailbox money" if your case falls into one of these three categories.
1. You can't sit, stand, or walk for a full workday
The first is not being able to sit, stand, or walk for a combination of eight hours in a workday, with heavy emphasis on not being able to sit. This category is for the hardest cases: people who couldn't complete an eight-hour shift if their life depended on it.
You see this with severe injuries to the neck, spine, or hips, with catastrophic workplace injuries, and with people undergoing treatment for conditions like cancer. These are the cases where no one would be shocked to hear that you have to lie in bed all day.
2. You're 50 or older (the grid rules)
The second category is the grid rules. The grid rules make it much easier to qualify for disability benefits once you turn 50. At 50, you get a whole set of new tools that can move a case from the loss column into the win column.
If you're over 50, there are things you can and should be doing on your disability claim. If you want to research this further, and you should, I've put a playlist of videos on this topic on my TikTok profile.
3. You meet a listing
The third category is the Social Security disability listings. If you meet a listing and you are not working, you automatically qualify for disability.
Some listings are clear and easy to understand. For example, if you're in a coma for 30 days, you automatically qualify for disability for up to one year. Other listings are a word salad of legalese and medical jargon. You can read the listings yourself on the Social Security Administration's website.
If you think you meet a listing, I'd recommend contacting an attorney, because the SSA doesn't always spot these issues on its own.
Final thought
If your case fits one of these three categories, you're starting from a strong position. Make sure the SSA sees it clearly, and with the listings especially, don't count on the SSA to find it for you.
